Dilation and curettage, commonly referred to as D&C, is a short procedure in which the cervix is dilated and a portion of the uterine lining is removed. Dilation and curettage can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. It can be used to diagnose abnormal uterine bleeding and bleeding after menopause, uterine cancers, uterine polyps and endometrial hyperplasia. As a therapy, D&C may be used to treat and remove a molar pregnancy (in which a tumor forms instead of an embryo), excess placenta after a delivery, cervical polyps, uterine polyps and fibroid tumors.

Dilation and curettage takes about 30 minutes, during which patients are under anesthesia. After going home patients may notice spotting and mild cramping. Women who have not yet gone through menopause may have a late period after a D&C, as the uterine lining needs additional time to build up.

Our physicians are extremely adept at this and many other gynecologic and obstetric procedures. For more information on dilation and curettage or any other procedures, please contact our office at 727.935.6477 (Palm Harbor) or 727.789.9006 (Trinity).
